Tasmanian wildlife tours from Hobart

Tasmanian devils, wombats and kangaroos are why many visitors add a wildlife stop. Near Hobart the choices are sanctuary visits such as Bonorong or the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo, as admission only or combined with Mount Field, Richmond or the Tasman Peninsula. A sanctuary is a managed visit, not a wild encounter, and the listing tells you which one you are booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Port Arthur close to Hobart?

Port Arthur is about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from Hobart by road. Most tours that include it are full-day trips of eight to ten hours, because they add a cruise, lookouts or other stops.

How do I get to Bruny Island?

You drive to the ferry terminal at Kettering, roughly 45 minutes from Hobart, and cross for about half an hour. Day tours from Hobart handle this and usually run around ten hours.

Can I do Wineglass Bay or Cradle Mountain as a day trip from Hobart?

Yes, but they are long days. Freycinet, the park around Wineglass Bay, is roughly two and a half to three hours by road and Cradle Mountain about five, so the listings run from around ten to fifteen hours.

Can I drive up kunanyi / Mount Wellington in winter?

Not always. The city council closes Pinnacle Road when snow or ice make it unsafe. Check the road status before you go, or choose a tour that decides on the day.

Is Hobart a beach destination?

No. Hobart is a harbour city. Famous bays such as Wineglass Bay are on the east coast, a long drive away, and are visited on day trips or multi-day tours.

When is Salamanca Market on?

Every Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm at Salamanca Place. Check the weekday if you plan a city tour around it.
