Hobart Harbour from the Water: Kayak or River Cruise?
4 min read
Paddle if you want to be on the water yourself and can manage 2.5 hours; take a river cruise if you want to sit, listen and keep it to an hour or so. The harbour kayak tour and the two short cruises from Murray Street Pier are different outings rather than rivals.
| Option | Length | From | Rating | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobart kayak tour with fish and chips | 2.5 hours | €74.87 | 4.8/5 from 38 reviews | Active, no experience needed |
| Morning river cruise under the Tasman Bridge | 1 hour | €24.33 | 4.5/5 from 48 reviews | A short, relaxed look |
| Historic lunch cruise | 1.5 hours | €43.05 | 4.5/5 from 331 reviews | A meal on board |
The kayak tour
The tour starts at Sandy Bay with a local guide, passes Battery Point, glides under fishing wharves and enters the Hobart docks, close to yachts, tall ships and working fishing boats. The finale is fish and chips eaten from the kayak. It uses stable double sea kayaks, and the page says no experience is needed. Equipment and weather protection are included. The booking page lists transportation to and from Sandy Bay without saying whether it is included or where it would start, so confirm with the operator before you book; otherwise plan to make your own way to the meeting point. The meeting point is 14 Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay.
Limits: people over 120 kg (264 lbs) are listed as not suitable. Younger participants can join if they team up with an adult, strictly one adult per child booked, so ask the operator about a minimum age before booking for a small child.
The cruises
Both cruises depart from Murray Street Pier. The morning river cruise lasts one hour, goes upstream past the Botanical Gardens and Government House, under the Tasman Bridge and across to Rose Bay, returning via Montagu Bay. There is a licensed bar on board, with food and drinks available to buy. Wheelchair users are listed as not suitable.
The historic lunch cruise runs 1.5 hours south past Battery Point and Sandy Bay, then across to Bellerive and under the Tasman Bridge. A one-course lunch (steak, crumbed fish, chicken schnitzel or a veggie patty) is included, with a children’s meal for ages 6 to 12, according to the booking page. Mobility impairments and wheelchair users are listed as not suitable.
Which one for whom
The kayak stays between Sandy Bay and the docks: you sit at water level among the boats and get fish and chips, but the outing lasts 2.5 hours under your own paddle power. Both cruises go further, under the Tasman Bridge, and you see the river from a seat in 1 to 1.5 hours. For more boat trips, see Hobart cruises and boat tours.
Recommendation
For most active visitors, book the kayak tour at €74.87. If a 2.5-hour paddling tour does not appeal, take the lunch cruise at €43.05 for a seated meal, or the one-hour river cruise at €24.33.
