Salamanca Market and Hobart on Your Own: Walk, Bus or Guide?
4 min read
Salamanca Market runs every Saturday from 8:30am to 3pm, so plan a Hobart city day around a Saturday morning, then add a guided walk or a bus loop for the history. The market needs no ticket; the tours below only matter if you want the stories behind the sandstone.

The market
The City of Hobart, which runs it, describes the market as every Saturday from 8:30am to 3pm, rain, hail or shine, with more than 300 stalls along Salamanca Place. The market’s own site says it runs all year and skips a Saturday only when Anzac Day or Christmas Day falls on one; it lists normal trading on 19 and 26 December 2026 and 2 January 2027. Check the day’s stallholders on the market site before you go.
A guided walk
The historic walking tour lasts 1.5 hours and starts at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre, 20 Davey Street. Its page says it operates Monday to Saturday in high season and Wednesday to Saturday in June, July and August, so a Saturday works all year. The page promises convict tales, colonial secrets and heritage-listed buildings, and carries a wheelchair-accessible label; confirm your access needs with the operator before booking. If you are bringing children, ask the operator about a minimum age.
Bus and coach tram
The hop-on hop-off ticket is valid for 24 hours from first boarding, with buses between 9:00am and 4:30pm, seven days a week. Its stops include Brooke Street Pier, Salamanca Place, Battery Point, Cascade Brewery, the Female Factory and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, with commentary in English and, on selected buses, in seven more languages. The Gray Line 3-hour tour covers much of the same city ground on a converted coach tram from Brooke Street Pier (the page warns that another vehicle may be used), but it also crosses the Tasman Bridge to Rosny Hill lookout, which is not on the bus route; it stops at the Cascade Gardens, Rosny Hill lookout and the Botanical Gardens, and a morning departure finishes around 12:45pm. Neither is a substitute for walking the market itself.
Hobart plus MONA
The 8-hour city tour includes a 3-hour coach tour of the city, a MONA entry ticket and a return ferry to Brooke Street Pier, arriving about 5:30pm. It leaves roughly three hours at the museum. For how long the museum itself takes, see our MONA guide.
Recommendation
On a Saturday, walk the market in the morning and book the historic walking tour at €26.20 for the afternoon; check the booking calendar for an afternoon start. On other days, the hop-on hop-off bus at €31.20 is the flexible choice. More walks and heritage tours are under Hobart city and history tours.
